Through homework assistance and completion, our Power Hour program is intended to help young people develop academic, behavioral, and social skills. Members get help with homework from one of our staff members or volunteers.
This program is available from Tuesday through Friday, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in our E.P. “Chuck” Charlton Library.
This club is open for all of our members. Each participant will read a designated book, participate in a group discussion, and conclude each session with a project relevant to the reading and discussion.
We offer 3 separate programs:
K – Second Grade Book Club
Third – Fifth Grade Boys Book Club
Third – Fifth Grade Girls Book Club
This is a weekly hands-on science program wherein the members run their own science experiments, including ROVs (remotely operated vehicles) and ZOOM Glue. This club is science, engineering, problem solving, and fun all rolled into one.
These programs aim to develop our members’ technical skills, critical thinking, and creativity. The members create projects in graphic design, web design, electronic music making, digital photography, and digital movie making.
The members learn artistic concepts and technology skills by using digital courseware for group and individual activities. With this knowledge, the members create professional-quality print materials and animation using photo manipulation software and Microsoft Publisher.
Members take digital photographs and study distance, angle, and photo composition. Then, through interactive courseware, they learn to manipulate digital photos in group and individual activities. They do everything from basic tasks, such as cropping and adjusting color and light, to advanced projects, such as using image filters and layering with photo manipulation software.
Through interactive digital courseware, the members explore music software and basic music theory in individual and group activities. They also learn to write sheet music, mix music loops, compose, and record songs.
The members create simple movies using movie-editing software in individual and group activities through interactive digital courseware. The detailed instructor materials show the Club staff how to walk members through the procedures of screenplay writing, filming, and digital movie editing.
This is a program designed to familiarize the youth with technology, specifically basic computer skills, Internet use, and productivity software.
The members create various art projects through different mediums including collage, sculpture, mixed media, watercolor, and monochromatic and multicolored drawing. A yearly art exhibit is held showcasing each member’s work. Then, the artwork is sent to the regional and, potentially, national level.
This program enables members to learn how to turn 3D objects into 2D drawings as well as how to create their own drawings. Techniques such as perspective drawing and shading will be taught in the mediums of multicolored and monochromatic drawings.
This class allows members to work with various types of paint including watercolor, acrylic, and tempera. Throughout this class, the participants will learn to shade and use different brush techniques.
The kids will learn how to work with different mediums, such as mixed media, pastels, and collage materials, during Open Arts Room. This involves a variety of fun projects from printmaking to arts and crafts.
